Pocket doors are very charming, they are finding a resurgence in popularity lately. These types of doors were very popular with turn of the nineteenth century builders. They were used to save space and add privacy.

These doors are made to slide into the wall, recovery the floor space that is needed to open and close a typical door. They were often used in apartment spaces as a means to save space but were also quite popular in homes as well.

There are several options for these kinds of doors. They can be built right into the wall in the traditional manner, or they can slide behind a wall which is a more modern turn. Typically when they slide behind the wall they are used for closet spaces these are not true pocket style doors but are still referred to as the same.

With the true versions the doors were built in between to connecting layers of drywall or sheetrock. There was a track built in between the wall and the doors were connected to the track they could be pulled out for privacy or to cut off two spaces or they could be slid into the wall for more space. These doors were often used to close off areas to conserve heat or to hide a sleeping area. They precisely had a function when they were invented. Many spaces when these doors were invented had dual duty. They may have been sleeping spaces at night and living spaces while the day, so to supply privacy they were shut at night but to supply the further space that was needed they were opened while the day.

Today these types of doors are used still to save space but are by and large more of a novelty. In older homes these doors were a bit heavy, in newer construction the doors are commonly hollow core doors to supply ease of use.

Installing

It is by far easier to install pocket doors for use in closets than it is to retrofit an existing wall for pocket doors. Pro premise to retrofit pocket doors is approximately always warranted unless the do it yourselfer has total carpentry experience.

These doors are a great way to save space and to add a bit of old world charm to a home. Folks are falling in love all over again with these great doors. They are excellent for small spaces and for ordinarily any space that needs a bit of privacy options.
