All About the French Flag

While it waves mightily and highly, the tricolors of the French flag exhibit the exuberance of French tradition and goodwill. The symbolism the flag relays gives the country a sense of pride and nationalism. It gives the world a peek at what France and its habitancy stand for.

The flag was used while the French Revolution in 1794. At the storming of the Bastille, the tricolors were used by the revolutionist and it marked the starting of the republic. Thus, the tricolors may be said to rehearse liberty, fraternity and equality.

The colors are said to give historical and political meaning. The red and blue are colors of Paris while white is the color of the Royalty while the time of the Revolution. However, some connect the colors to the use of white by the Royalists and red by the Jacobins. In addition, some attribute the colors as white for the clergy, red for the nobility and blue for the bourgeoisie.

The colors are also referred to religious symbolism. Blue represents Saint Martin or Martin of Tours. White is for the Virgin Mary and is also linked to Joan of Arc. The color red is for Saint Dennis. He is determined as the patron saint of Paris.

There are some other associations made to the French Tricolor. Some recapitulate it to the Hundred Years War when blue field was the appropriate used by the French army. The color red and white are said to rehearse England (red) and France (white).
